oh finals season, i hate you so. barely consumed anything of substance this month but here i am as a self centred arse to tell you about it.

📽 movies

for having watched a small amount of movies for the month, i was pleasantly surprised by most!

1. newsies — ⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

memento was a rewatch for my cogsci class, and i was equally as enamoured as the other two times i've watched it, and i still think it stays on my favourite psych thriller movies list. quick thoughts on the new movies i watched —

newsies

man, this was :heart_eyes: i'd been meaning to watch this one since i read riah's newsies chenji fic, and since i am also writing a theatre kids fic currently, it made sense for me to pick this up. i'm already a fan of 1900s movies and musicals, so this fit directly into my "likes" list. the songs were AMAZING, the storyline was riveting, the characters were surprisingly worth rooting for, and i am simply a chris bale fan. in general — this movie was catered directly to me. i have a soft spot for the david/goliath trope and this film really brought it out so well. also david <3 you're so cool ily. in general i think even thematically, the concept of newsies was so nice, and the old nyc accents and just the suspenders, the newspaper boy hats, the commentary on politics and how the rich eat the poor. right up my alley i 10/10 recommend this one!

(redacted) short film

not revealing what this is bc it's a local short film from my country that doesn't have eng subtitles which means it'll be obvious where i'm from. anyways, my mother recc-ed this to me saying it was "relatable", it just gave me ptsd. it was based from a dad's point of view whose son was in his last year of high school and everything that happened in the 12 minutes of this film just gave me so much grief and pain and i just — god. i applaud the writer/director for fitting so much in 12 minutes but this was so painful, tiring and just ugh for me to watch. my mum clearly needs some good recs if it's come to this.

in general though, newsies and memento were a highlight this month, so i'm not complaining.

📺 shows/dramas

your girl actually managed to binge stuff this month !!! it's been so long since i've binged ANYTHING but i guess the stress coupled with procrastination helped, and then followed by my small 3 day vacation <3 the stuff i finished watching this month—

1. prince of tennis s1 — ⭑⭑⭑⭑.5
2. law school — ⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

i have loads and loads of thoughts about both. i'll divulge into law school thoughts here. as for tenipuri, i have a whole dw post dedicated to season 1 coming at you soon!

law school

i've talked about how i've been in a kdrama slump post run on wherein neither have i watched a drama to completion, much less binged anything. law school broke me out of both those prisons. i binged this one over 3 days (which is still slow by my standards but oh well) and i regretted not a second of it. i know that in a more realistic sense, this would probably be a 4 star given that there were some obvious plotholes and unresolved events that seemed to be done a little bit in a hurry, but the one extra star had to be there because of how much i enjoyed this PERSONALLY. the way the plot involved all the characters with various different reasons, the inherent 6 degrees of separation of it all, people with personal motives completely throwing investigations off, the LAW, and oh PLEASE the gazes between sol A and joon hwi i almost died.

also the peak humour —

okay agreeably the lack of canon romance was a little bit disappointing for the hopeless romantic hoe that is me, but also i Get it, you know. that's NOT what the drama was about, and joonhwi and sol A are both more than just romantic leads. same goes for every other character. i appreciate the longing, endeared gazes courtesy of kim beom <3 in general, i really enjoyed all the dynamics, storytelling and wit that went into this one, definitely one of my faves!

i actually did not finish i told sunset about you or prison playbook which is sad but also finals season. idk i don't think i got into them enough to feel the desperate need to watch them, even if i will continue them bc i do think they're good dramas.

in general i had my hands full with tenipuri and law school wherein i watched the former as i procrastinated/had anxiety attacks over my very tiring finals, and the latter right after i finished finals bc i needed something to revive me lol.

as far as other media consumptions go — again, i watched almost everything nct dream put out this month, and also scattered txt, bts and aespa stuff. that's all, i was majorly just watching tenipuri for most part.

again, most of this is not surprising in the slightest — txt had a comeback on may 31st, which followed through into june for me, and this album immediately made it to my favourites (can you tell how attached i got to wiihbtp and dear sputnik? the latter is also the theme song for a fic so i listened to it obsessively, and the former got me through ALL my finals submissions, on repeat) when i was not listening to txt, i was listening to dream (again, no surprises there), and also some carly rae jepsen scattered in there bc she always is lol. i streamed a lot of red after taylor announced it coming out on the 19th of november, and exo again i got a lil nostalgic lol. hello future and lisgo really said "top tracks btch" and made it to top 10 within one day which says a lot about how much i adore this repackage!!! (chenle's adlibs <333 jaemin has lines <3333 what a day and age to be alive)

my scrobbles went up by a bit bc i obsessively played music in the background when working on essays, and artists went up bc i've been trying to find new music to title my fics after lol (literally 90% of my fics are carly rae jepsen based i need to STOP). anyways that's all i have for music this month. listen to lisgo, soty <3333

📚 reading

this user has not read a single published book this month save for her textbooks (gonna try blaming finals season but we all know i'm lying)

as per usual, you'll probably see all of these in my ao3 bookmarks. the top first-time reads of the month are—

• battle royal by karasunovolleygays | went into a much expected ryosaku brainrot and discovered my favourite ryosaku writer! they capture ryoma's dynamic so very perfectly in her, and i will give my life up for sakuno. so. there's that i guess.


• smoke rings by lovelanguages | this was ?!?!?! perfect !!!! you know it was when i say it for ships i DON'T EVEN SHIP (i'm a staunch taegyu and yeonbin shipper okay). it was hilarious and the college dorm life was so relatable and the friendships and the relationships and i just. yeah. it was such a fun fic to read omg.


• six feet under by idelyski | my fave chenji canon comp to ever exist. wow. alice did an incredible job with this one, what with really chalking out chenji's personalities, and the PROSE !!!! god i'd die for it. i love their writing style so much and they served with this one!


• in heavenly green (he flies) by mintdrop | SPACE. OPERA. NOMIN. if i haven't hooked you yet — stellar writing, well made worlds, histories, politics, spacefighters, best friends, symbolism, and just everything you'd want from a sci fi fic. go read it.


• the fanboy's guide to flaming fanfiction by hwarium | what else do i say except that this was hilarious and i died laughing.


• other lives, dimensions and finally a love song by moonseul | yes, i am cheating bc i first read this on may 31st but I HAVE TO INCLUDE IT? i can't believe i'm the recipient of this magnificent fic. my sci fi world has truly been amazing this month. i've not been shy about how much i adore moon's work, and this is no exception. such a well thought out and executed story with parallel universes, time travel and just. THEY ARE IN LOVE IN EVERY UNIVERSE POSSIBLE [breaks down] just please go read it i am begging you <3

here's a summary of this month in a nutshell: reads every ryosaku fic in existence on ao3 (pls contribute i am in need), reads more chenji fic, reads txt fic (!!!!), re-reads comfort fics, rinse and repeat.

love how last month i wrote actual meaningful and retrospective descriptions to why i liked the fics i liked and this month i am like !!!! so cool pls read !!!! lmao finals brain go brrrr i guess. i will reflect and maybe come back with a better image (probably not)

💻 writing

uh. did i even write this month? okay to be fair that is a lie. i wrote a lot. in the forms of essays, analyses and research papers. *long suffering sigh* i did write bits and pieces of various fest fics this month, did some planning for some of my other fics, and wrote two short experimental drabbles (a gen fic and a sapphic fic !!! yay to exploring different stuff) so in general i did. Write. but like. i have nothing to show for it. it's okay. as long as i'm writing, as long as i'm enjoying and as long as i'm growing <3

💌 misc thoughts

the positivity from last month's post kind of went away this month . . . it was just a very anxiety inducing month for me and hopefully i can recover and feel better now that it's relaxed out a bit! i have so much in the works that i'm excited about, so if i actually keep at it and be good about it, you guys are going to see quite some content coming at you in the next few months! i also want to be more mindful while consuming media, and writing about it is definitely a start — i also want to curate my experiences so i don't constantly read what's in the hype but what caters to me and my likings, so that's what i'm going to be trying from now on :) in all, june was bad but i'm excited for july!

this post was all over the place and nothing like my well thought out post last month which just tells you how this month has been. maybe i'll have better takes next month. at least the media i DID consume was GOOD media. i was lucky in that respect.
